Cellist Andres Diaz and violinist Nigel Armstrong will head the guest-artist roster for the 2018 St. Augustine Music Festival held on June 21-23 and 28-30. The virtuoso guest string players will be showcased in works by Bach, Haydn, Schubert and more.
Armstrong, whose past performances have won him many fans, will be featured on opening night, June 21. He’s emerging as a dynamic and creative artist both within and beyond the realm of classical music. Diaz, a member of the dazzling Diaz Trio, has proven himself as a Music Festival standout with a number of engaging performances with the trio and as a soloist. He’ll perform during the second week, which runs June 28 to June 30.
On June 28, Ileana Fernandez and Wendy Chen will take charge of twin Steinways to kick off the second week of the festival with Wolfgang Mozart’s engagingly refined Piano Concerto No. 10 in E-flat for Two Pianos, K. 365. After intermission, they will join the orchestral menagerie in Camille Saint-Saens’ colorful “Carnival of the Animals,” a tongue-in-cheek musical depiction of the animal kingdom, from ferocious lions to gently drifting fish to, well, obsessive pianists!
Also featured for the Music Festival are:
- Chamber music highlighting late-19th and 20th-century masters, including Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss and Shostakovich
- Works featuring brass and the Cathedral’s impressive pipe organ and accoustics
- Orchestral works by Janacek and Haydn
