Over 1400 colonists from Asia Minor, Corsica, Italy and Minorca with 500 Greeks from Arcadia, Crete, Laconia, and Messinia whose love of freedom and a better life for themselves and their families brought them to the New World in 1768. They settled and worked the largest European Colony in the New World, the New Smyrna Colony. They found sanctuary at the Avero House which houses our “Plymouth Rock”, St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine in St. Augustine.
