Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Remembrance

January 15, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm

Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, St. Augustine will host numerous events including a breakfast, silent procession, and birthday celebration.

In the summer of 1965 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists put the city of St. Augustine in national headlines. King traveled to the ancient city with one goal in mind – push the efforts of the civil rights movement in the south. King was successful and he, along with other activists, are responsible for getting the attention the movement needed, resulting in President Lyndon B. Johnson pressuring the Senate into passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  Not only are there several monuments around St. Augustine dedicated to King and activists, but we also celebrate his birthday each year.
