St. Augustine’s community is thriving and healthy because of our strong belief in shopping local. Whether you are in search of a hand-sewn bag or delicious baked goods, chances are, a small business is selling it. With a plethora of great local shops, is there ever a reason to visit a big box store?

Small Business Saturday

In 2010, the major company American Express initiated a campaign called Shop Small. Since then, America celebrates Small Business Saturday on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Luckily, this is a natural course of action for many St. Augustinians. However, residents and visitors should still emphasize their appreciation for small businesses each year on November 25th.

St. Augustine is rich in history and culture, which is evident in the coquina walls and cobblestone paths of downtown. But, big box stores have the potential to damage our quaint town if we don’t continue to support small businesses.

The nation’s oldest city has suffered two majorly damaging hurricanes in the past two years, first Matthew, and then Irma. Many small businesses suffered irreparable damages caused by these natural disasters. In fact, a few are still working towards getting their doors open. Consequently, it is imperative that the St. Augustine community stick by the side of each small business.
